So your due date is coming soon, and if you're reading this I am going to assume that you're a first time parent. After all, you wouldn't be reading this if this was your second pregnancy, that way you could just re-use all your old baby clothes.

It's quite easy to get carried away as a new mom (or dad) and go out shopping for pretty designer tops and pants, but you should refrain from doing this until the later years when your little one grows into a toddler. That will be their cutest period of their life and that's the time you can have them wear all the cute little outfits you spent your hard-earned money on.

But for the meantime, let's focus on the basics for an infant's wardrobe. Below are some tips I have learned from other moms, as well as from personal experience.

For newborn clothes, pay attention to the following:

• Make sure that all the garments are made of natural fibers such as cotton. Cotton allows your baby's skin to breathe naturally whilst synthetics do not. You can always wear the synthetic clothing over the cotton if you want, as this will prevent baby skin irritation.
• Make sure the clothing is easy to get on and off. Most babies will not like it when you change their clothes, hence an efficient and quick change is required.
• Always choose zippers over buttons as they are much easier to utilize especially when your little one starts wriggling about.
• Fancy clothing as well as embellishments can annoy infants. Things like beads and bow ties can be a potential safety hazard.
• Clothing that is durable and easy to clean should be on the top of your list. Being able to just throw it into the washing machine or dryer simply puts more time back into your day to do the more important things.
• Avoid the type of clothes that require ironing such as pleated dresses or skirts. It is just too time-consuming and you already have your plate full.
• Watch out for jumpsuits that have buttons going down the back. These make nap times seriously difficult and uncomfortable. It is no wonder some parents complain about their babies waking up and crying so often.
